Coaching Highlight: Facing Fear in Leadership
from Chapter 1 of the 20th Anniversary Edition
Six nights, six nightmares. And always the same. A failed company. Disgrace in his profession. Loss of his house. Abandoned by his wife and son.
Insight
Leaders often carry the weight of unspoken fears. The pressure to appear strong can push them to hide vulnerability, yet buried anxiety leaks out in other ways: negativity, impatience, defensiveness, or overcontrol. Boards that understand this dynamic are better equipped to support leaders, not by excusing weakness but by encouraging transparency and perspective. A wise board recognizes that self-awareness is not weakness but strength, and that leaders who acknowledge their fears are often more grounded and resilient.
Reflection
- What signals might I notice when a leader is carrying hidden fear or pressure?
- How does our board create space for the CEO to be candid about challenges without fear of judgment?
- Do I personally see vulnerability in leadership as a liability or as a sign of maturity?
- What impact does suppressed anxiety have on decision-making and relationships in the boardroom?
- How might our board balance accountability with empathy so that leaders feel supported as well as challenged?
Exercises
- Story swap: Invite directors to share a time they faced leadership pressure that kept them awake at night. Discuss what helped them move through it.
- Signal spotting: In the next few meetings, notice and note subtle cues of stress in management presentations. Debrief together on whether those cues deserve a supportive conversation.
- Safe space session: Schedule a private board-CEO dialogue specifically for surfacing challenges and fears. No agenda items, only honest conversation.
- Vulnerability practice: During a board retreat, ask each director to share one personal leadership lesson learned through failure. Reflect on how vulnerability strengthens trust.
