The Imperfect Board Member

Coaching Highlight: Setting the Tone

from Chapter 2 of the 20th Anniversary Edition

Some directors spoke simply about their background, but others listed major business deals and accomplishments as though they were establishing rank.

Insight

When directors meet for the first time, how they present themselves can quietly shape the culture of the board. Subtle competition over accomplishments can discourage humility and create an atmosphere where only the loudest or most decorated voices are valued. Boards that function at their best recognize that governance is not about status but about stewardship. Each member has a role to play, and the chair has the responsibility to set a tone that honors contribution over credentials.

Reflection

  • When I introduce myself in a new group, what tone do I set?
  • How do our introductions as a board communicate the kind of culture we want to build together?
  • Do I notice differences in whose voices are given more weight, and what might that reveal about unspoken hierarchies?
  • What does genuine respect look like when board members have very different levels of experience or accomplishment?
  • How can I personally encourage collaboration rather than competition in the way I interact with fellow directors?

Exercises

  1. Introduction reset: At the next board retreat, invite each director to reintroduce themselves by sharing what motivates them to serve rather than listing their credentials. Reflect together on how this changes the tone.
  2. Observation round: During meetings, ask directors to note who speaks most and who speaks least. Debrief on whether the balance reflects healthy collaboration.
  3. Chair’s check: Role-play how a chair can redirect a boastful introduction into a more balanced contribution, reinforcing that all voices carry equal value.
  4. Peer recognition: Close a meeting with each director affirming one strength they appreciate in another board member. Notice how mutual respect shifts dynamics.
